This home in the Little Tuscany neighborhood of Palm Springs was completely reimagined and updated for a modern lifestyle, while honoring the essence of mid-century living. The renovation focused on updating the home with durable materials, energy efficiency, and modern technology all with a sophisticated aesthetic that required custom detailing.

A window wall along the street front opened the home to light and neighbors passing by. A custom picket fence creates privacy and whimsy without compromising views.

A large stone sculpture in the front, oversized stone firepits in the rear, and boulders craned in place throughout the property expand on the neighborhood’s natural abundance of boulders from the San Jacinto mountains.

The original pool was modernized to add an 8-foot tanning shelf along the full length. An oversized spa waterfalls over an infinity edge creating a tranquil sound effect. The patio features floating tile with drainage underneath for easy hosing off of the desert dust.

The kitchen was enlarged to create room for a modern workspace and oversized island for guests to gather around. Stacking sliding doors invite the outside in and are supported by an exposed steel post that mirrors the steel supports of the island.

The original fireplace was found to be structurally compromised, and a new fireplace with elongated blocks ties to the new block wall on the exterior. Custom walnut cabinetry conceals a hidden door and blends seamlessly with the TV and soundbar surround.

A floating wall divides the sleeping quarters from the primary bathroom. The shower was modified for a walk-in entrance, and plumbing was extended outside to add an exterior shower.

Knowing this bedroom would be utilized as an exercise room, blocking was added to the wall for additional support for a folding weight rack. Soundproofing material was added to the walls to protect the living area from loud music and feet thumping on the treadmill.

Additional lighting was added throughout the home with Lutron smart home integration. Recessed cabinet lighting offers ambiance, while in-ceiling lighting was added for functionality. Electrical conduits were embedded in the roof substrate to keep wires hidden inside and out.

A northern exposure was ideal to protect the walnut pivot door from the harsh sun. The jamb was mitered on-site to add visual weight to the oversized door, and an large swing-out window allows a cross-breeze throughout the house.
